Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The proposal sought to renovate Mohammed Makiya’s Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) building in Manama. Inaugurated in 1980 as an office building, the Makiya building occupies a prominent location along the Manama Waterfront. The structure is emblematic of the economic boom of the 1980s as well as the role that Iraqi modernists played in developing the region’s skyline.

Since its opening, the steel-frame structure had deteriorated significantly, and the need to accommodate a new academic program made a full refurbishment necessary. Civil Architecture’s proposal looks to maintain the building's façade and character, while introducing key public elements and amenities to the Makiya structure. An atrium was introduced, allowing light into the formerly deep slabs as well as providing new spaces for congregation. The existing outdoor parking lot is moved underground in favor of a new entry pavilion and exhibition space, as well as allowing for the introduction of a new public park in the densest part of Manama.
